A Portrait

This is a self-portrait I painted 12 years ago. Accompanying it, a portrait of words I wrote in response to a prompt from Alix Klingenberg: Poem/Journal Prompt:

Create a self-portrait in words: who are you right now?

Content. Resilient. Quiet.

Seizing silence and the big juicy slices

Of watermelon

Sharing, giving, receiving

Seeking grace for myself

Like soft whipped cream on

A génoise sponge.

Holding space, forging new paths

Honoring my lineage while also discarding it

Like pistachio shells on the gravel.

Coming into my own by learning

From the one I bore

What it means to be

My own home.
